I've planted a bunch of different hybrids on my property from Morse nursery in battle creek, mi. Its only been a couple years growth has been decent but not great.

I would be very interested!

This is a little off subject, but do you (or anyone on the forum) know anything about Dunstan chestnuts? I've researched them some and of course the company selling them claims deer love them and they're the best thing ever "extremely fast growing, heavy mast each year" yadda yadda

Hybrid chestnuts will grow, just won't be identical to parent tree. I have dunstans growing but had some dieback. We will see they are going on year 3 next year. I have some other varieties that would be better for most of Wisconsin, my guess is that dunstans may do ok in southern wi but it's pushing their range as you go north. I do know of one guy in central wi having good luck with them so far. I hope to have a chestnut patch to hunt within the next 5 years, think it will be a strong draw.

You're saying the resulting chestnut seeds won't grow if planted? Sorry if that's a dumb question I know next to nothing about planting/growing trees

Yes they will grow, but won't be identical to the parent tree. Definitely worth planting!

The ones I have tried grew about 3 feet the first year but hot dieback due to being on the edge of hardiness. I expect nuts within 5 years with the hardy trees I'm starting this winter. As the nuts aren't identical in features to the parent tree, some will be more Chinese like (shorter) and some wil be more American (taller). The taller typed fo grow several feet per year I'm told.

Twenty up,

I'd love to grow some for you. I'm located in Upstate SC.

I live where I hunt and am able to take good care of my trees and keep close watch on them, even haul some water during the driest times.

I have 6 growing currently, I traded or donated the rest of my seedlings. They're extremely hardy and chestnuts in general are one of the best natural food sources for deer. Mine are 2 years old and in 5 gallon pots.
