Seeking Advice/ Guidance

Unread postby VA5326 » Thu Apr 16, 2015 5:02 pm

This is the first of two properties I have permission to hunt this upcoming season. Could use a little help from Dan and friends. I didn't get a chance to hit the swamp this winter after the season and I don't have a lot of experience in the swamp anyways. This is a new piece a friend and I have recently received permission to hunt next year. Red marks property boundaries and the blue squares are where stands currently are. The circle of blue is where I found excellent sign (clusters of BIG rubs and Big Tracks; and it just felt like a core/staging area) sign while scouting in early Spring. I know there are a ton of overlooked areas here. I have an idea of where I need to look and am steadfastly learning topos but I always like to see what the professionals think as well to ensure that I have missed some anomaly land feature/ terrain features. I'm hoping to get out here for some early season hunts as well as rut hunts. As always, thank you for any guidance.

If you want to kill a deer you have to be in the woods.

Is access mainly from the lower half? If so, I would expect great bedding on the points over looking the swamp on the North side... I would walk the thermal tunnel elevation on the north side of the swamp, and I would walk the entire edge of the swamp and look for bucks that bed in the swamp and feed on acorns where the hardwoods and hills start.

Yes Dan. Access is mainly from the lower half but it is also accessible through the Northern side via logging roads. Any places you see that you like better than others? Thanks again.

Everything on the north side of the swamp looks good... Pressure would dictate whats best. If it were me I would scout the thermal tunnel elevation above the swamp, and the swamps edge entirely.

Think about what wind you would likely be hunting while you scout.
