Rut Setup help???

Unread postby mattyq2402 » Sat Mar 14, 2015 1:23 pm

This SE Ohio prop like the other 2 I have posted holds big deer. Received very limited pressurenlast year, only one buddy hunts and usually in gun season. I didn't hunt it last season but two years ago i missed a app. 140 inch 9point. If I make it home this fall in November I will likely get over to this chunk, very little pressure. I am looking for rut set up help and potential bedding, any help is appreciated. I am thinking anywind from N/NW would be ideal. However S/SW are typical in November.

Green are food plots from past, nothing actively planted this spring or last fall. There is a small pond. There is a ridge that runs from NW to SE near middle of screen, the leeward side is "very" steep so I question how to hunt it.

For a rut setup I like that little area to the NE of that middle food plot where everything comes together.

The draws close to the road interest me, its very thick in there, should be good bedding area but I'm unsure about trees. The ridge and point in the center have a drastic drop, when you have such a drop does anyone see a location near rhe middle of map to set up which would keep me in the tunnel??? The base of the drop off is a brushy field edge usually littered by scrapes.

I put a red dot where I would be on a S.E. wind, and a yellow dot on a more south wind.

No... Look at the elevation numbers. Bottom of valley is 800 feet top of ridge is about 1000 feet. The winds I suggested would blow over the valley from above and deer would cruise that ridge in the thermal tunnel.

Pink dot on a west wind... Slightly higher and blowing down the draw on a N.W. On s.w. I would suggest the orange dot or go hunt the other farms or some public.

Thanks a bunch for the help. I don't know a whole lot about this farm, only hunted it one day but some excellent deer have come off of it. I'll try and get some stands up soon on here, definitely more focused on my other two. I am pretty sure this particular ground is for sale... Would love to own this place, one can dream. Thanks again!
