Potential new 2015 spot - scouting advice?

Unread postby justin84 » Tue Dec 09, 2014 6:12 am

It looks like I'll have the chance to hunt this property in 2015. 240 acres in Price county, WI. I plan on taking a trip in spring to check it out, after I attend Dan's scouting workshop. Don't know much about the property yet; it looks mostly flat, with one big hump and a decent amount of birch and pines from the street view. Any thoughts where to start or focus scouting efforts?

I would begin with the high ground and walk tht hard transition just to the right of it.

Thanks Jeff. My initial thought was similar; work around that entire edge and go from there. I'm hoping to learn more this spring if/when Dan has another scouting workshop and hopefully I can put some of that to good use.

Like said before, start with hard transition lines along the humps you can see on the topo. I would guess since there are 3 or 4 spots that are over 10' higher than the swamp there are also several that are 2-9' high. I would hit the obvious stuff first and then check any changes in vegetation within the low ground that might signal an elevation change that doesn't show up on the 10' contour topo.

It's only 240 acres and you have access to it now? Why not walk the whole thing?

Unfortunately I can't get up there anytime soon. My friend's parents own the land and she's warming them up to the idea of allowing me to hunt there. Definitely plan to cover all of it this spring; I was curious where others might start, so I can come up with a plan on how to cover it all. From some of the comments I've read in other posts, >40 acres isn't easily scouted in a day.
