Hey guys I'm new to the forum my name is Matt and I live in northern Virginia.
I'm looking for advice on a gameplan for the G.R. Thompson WMA
Need help on the best way to do some in season scouting on some wma land without getting busted that is less than 40 min from where i live. I unfortunately don't have much time to hit the woods so i have to make it count.
today's wind is out of the nw for example
I was staring at the topo map and sat images to look for ridge tops and potential buck bedding but I suck at knowing what trees are what from an aerial view
Mainly just looking for some high percentage areas instead of setting up on areas that won't teach me anything
Thanks In advance!

Your not alone.. I can't make out the trees in that aerial either. Sometimes you can if you go thru the different years of aerials and find the right image.
I marked the areas I thought would have the best buck bedding in red... My blue stand positions have been placed with the knowledge of the approaching rut activity in combination of where bedding is... Regardless of trees, you need to hunt where the bucks move, and thats likely where I marked.
Looks like my picture got lost...

Here is an online hi-res topo map centered on that WMA. The WMA boundary is purple.
http://www.mappingsupport.com/p/gmap4.p ... &z=15&t=t4
You can change the basemap to the Google aerial and see lots of forest detail.
If you zoom in a bunch and open the basemap menu then you can turn on an "Overlay" that shows contour lines on top of the the aerial.
This map link will open with the browser on your cell phone. Then do Menu ==> "My location" and a symbol will appear on the map that will follow you around just like a GPS.
The map is displayed by Gmap4 (I am the developer). For tips on using this map offline, see:

Thanks for the heads up... Not sure what happened there... I will get the picture / map back up as soon as I can recreate it.

Re: looking for wma advice
Thanks for the info guys! The gmap thing looks cool. It beats having to buy a gps. Dan the stand locations you picked were pretty much exactly what I had in mind. Should I just focus on all day hunts in these stand locations. This land is really tough to access especially during this time of year and I'm concerned with not having a way to access without crunching away or leaving my my stink where I think the deer will come from. The wind gets real silly as well constantly changing direction against the landscape.

Re: looking for wma advice
You could certainly do all day hunts in those locations if you like... With rut approaching you never know, and if its going to hurt you to move around, yea, stay put. Maybe at some point when you get to know the land real well you can make moves during your rut hunts... For now staying put is a good option.
