Re: Mini Water Holes
Looks good, BS- one thing to stay on top of will be at leaf drop, that one or two weeks where the leaves come down like crazy. Mini water holes fill up fast, and the deer don't seem to be too fond of trying to suck water out of a big wet leaf pile. If your mini water hole is far from home, it can be a real problem. Once the deer are programmed into it being a water location, you don't want them to be disrupted from using it for any length of time if possible. Keep us posted on your results.

Re: Mini Water Holes
Thanks for the tip SB. It is far away from where I hunt, so it may be a problem. I will keep you guys up dated. I plan on hunting there the weekend of Sept. 24-26th.

Looks good.........If leaves will be a problem you might want to consider building some type of roof (next spring of course as you don't want to disturb them now) over the hole to keep leaves out, you could probably use smaller logs taken right from the woods.

Re: Mini Water Holes
Thanks for the tips Lung. I didn't hunt these this past week, they got 7 inches of rain, right before I got there... water everywhere, no shortag.

I put some of these in also this year squirrel..... I don't know about you, but mine have been getting pounded in the past week or two... I just filled mine up 2 weeks ago, which was about 45 gallons, and I looked at them last night, and they are almost completely dry... I need to fill them up again today....

Re: Mini Water Holes
I checked them this weekend, dry! They got about 5 inches of rain 2 weeks ago, so they should have been full. I totally depend on rain to fill them. They are located in swales, about a third of the way down from the tops. About the same elevation you would expect bedding. I really need to get some way to fill, them. With one, wich is located down hill from a road, I was thinking of running a garden hose to it, so I could fill it from the road. The other one, would be hard to get water to, just because of location/distance.

I hear ya, I wish mine was like a natural spring or something like that, but I have to hand fill mine up also... I try not to get any scent around them, but I also know that that is impossible not to leave some of my scent....

That is a bummer, I was actually just wondering about your watering holes last night and if you had any success with them. Man we need rain badly here, it is dryer than I have ever seen.

Re: Mini Water Holes
If they are made right they should rarely be empty... The last ones I worked with were about 4 feet deep in the middle when full and held quite a bit of water. that way they don't dry up.
They are also positioned where the natural run off will fill them real quick and the ground is pushed up in a "V" directing water to the pond... If the pond is to much in the channel it can get washed out. If it looks like wash out is possible we add a culvert so water runs thru the pipe rather than over the berm.

Re: Mini Water Holes
Mine are made out of Plastic 55 gal drums cut lengthwise. They probably only hold about 25 gals when full. There are no signs of washout. I think between evaporation, and useage they went dry. They were full in June when I checked them. We had gotten ample rain back then. They got quite a bit of rain 2 weeks ago, but none recently. 2 weeks seems kind of fast for them to go dry. They did have about 2 gallons worth of mud washed into them, though, which I cleaned out.

Re: Mini Water Holes
I had a logging road fixed that was all washed out from this summers rain, and I thought I would check out my waterhole as long as I was there... It was full of leaves, so I cleaned it out.. I hate putting my scent around the hole, but I'm not sure the deer will drink out of it if the top is full of leaves ?
