What plant is this?????

Does anyone know what this ???? Walked a new area today and found this planted in a field but I have no clue what it is. I am hoping some of you food plot guys might know. The deer sign around it was incredible to say the least. I pulled one out so I could find out what it was....Anyone ?

There was a ton of sign around this field but It did not seem as though they were eating it. Yet anyway. Maybe something they will hammer later in the season????

As far as brassicas go, that is close to the top for preference compared to others. They will forage on them now, but will step over the plant to get to corn, soybeans, etc.

You are correct. They get better in the late season.

I have been seeing farm fields everywhere this year plated with that plant.

These radishes are planted as a cover crop. The idea is, when the radish rotts it leaves a hole for drainage when the ground thaws out in the spring. My father in law plants them behind corn every year. As far as I can tell nothing really seems to eat them. It's actually pretty interesting how their planted. They spray them over the corn field while the corn is still standing from a crop duster.

I think they are also known as Groundhog forage radish. Do a Google image search.

Also known as trophy radish if you like paying too much for your seed. They eat them early by me.

Those radishes come November when the corn and beans are harvested will be a MEGA attractant to the local deer. When I planted them the deer started eating them heavy in late August... deer prefer those over purple tops, kale, dwarf rape and others I have planted

I planted about 0.3 acres of these in July next to a corn field. They were pretty much gone by the end of September BEFORE the corn came off. As you can see, not much left!







I often recommend brassicas, especially daikon radishes for those that want to try food plotting. A great plot can be established with no tillage.

I assuming this is a bigger field??? There is some new government restriction on collecting insurance $$$ and planting a cover crop such as the radishes.... I see them planted all over WI (some fields just WAY too big to be food plots)

My understanding is if the farmer did not get in soybeans or corn by such a calander date he can collect the insurance $$$ with the prevented planting rule. But many are planting a green cover crop (rye, oats, or daikon radishes) to help with soil tilth or in the radish's case breaking up the soil and preventing weeds from taking over the unplanted fields
