Round up and clover.

Unread postby Stanley » Fri Aug 02, 2013 12:41 am

A fertilizer/herbicides representative (Monsanto) told me yesterday that roundup won't kill clover. He said it knock it for a loop turns brown but comes back very strong. Anyone had any experience with this this?

I know people that use a reduced strength
Roundup on clover plots.
They say it will brown it up a little but not kill it.
Really makes it nice to get rid of the grasses.

Yea it works but you want to do it in the spring. Ed Spinnazola from the QDMA has a article on it. The ground needs to be 55 degrees, he does it for frost seeding. I have used it and it works great , knocks out the weeds and the clover comes back strong in about 5 weeks

It works great, BUT there are two main criteria that you must follow. 1) Only use 1 quart per acre and 2) Only do it on established stands. If you do it the year of seeding you will likely kill it.

There is some risk, but if you follow those two rules you should be fine. I wait until the third year, but it seems to work fine for some people during the second year of the stand. I have not tried it on a two year old stand myself.

Roundup will kill most clovers if you put on to much. Keeping it to a quart will minimize the risk.

We have a lot of clover in our yard. My wife will use round up so I don't have to weed eat and it takes a long time for the clover to die, it will eventually, a lot slower than the grass tho. And it will come back.

I disagree with this general statement does not kill clover. Round up or glyphosate at suggested rates will kill clover. At lesser rates it will "suppress" clover and it will come back. I have tried this a few times. 1.5 to 2 qts per acre does a good job a killing most weeds. I haves sprayed at lesser rates, say .5 or 1 qt per acre and set general annual weeds back and had clover respond positively. Applying a sufactant\penetrant with the herbicide can have a drastic affect on the rate as well. This all depends on time of year and how much moisture we recive before and after treatment. They do make round up ready blends of alfalfa but its not cheap seed. Mowing tends to do the trick for me. If the plots become weedy after a few years I will mow them 1 to 3 times in the summer. I then will frost seed at lower rates of more clover in the winter months. 5 years out of one clover plot is commom. Check ph and fertilize accordingly.
