Looking for funnels and pinch points

Unread postby bhamfowler » Tue Nov 20, 2012 9:47 am

Hey Guys,
Just found the site and love it! I am in a club 2300 ac 14 members and most of them like to hunt from a ladder stand
or a box stand overlooking a Greenfield or clearcut.
I am trying to find the secret of hunting funnels and would like some input. The land was all hardwoods but now mostly pines and thickets. I am hope to find a couple solid funnels before the rut kicks in. Our rut starts around the 1st of the year.
Click in the link below and it should take you to Boligee Alabama

Thanks

Its in between the spoil area and the river, and at a tight spot along the ridge where big bucks would cruise. I would expect rut cruising along those ridges north of the river going both East and West. It also looks to me like the best deer bedding would be Just north of the river along the hills and ridges and Western spoil area and bucks would cruise back and forth looking for does...

Thanks Dan,
Sorry for the typo on your name.
I will be trying the spot out this weekend. I went down to check it out but I did not find much sign rubs, scrapes ,heavy trails.
Should I have found a lot of sign or am I just hunting it because it is a funnel?
thanks again,
Barry

I would hunt it during the rut. And at that time, I would probably give it a sit once, sign or not if there does not appear to be heavy human pressure there.
Right now, I would be concentrating on food and nearby cover.

If I'm not mistaken, isn't mid to late December peak rut in southern Alabama?

Always found that interesting that most of the southern states have such a late rut, you would think it would be just the opposite. Was invited on a hunt in S. Texas some years ago, around Mcallen/Mission on the mexican border. Was interesting seeing the chasing phase of the rut in mid January, never would of thought of that, being rut was done around here for a couple of months.
