Feel free to mark up my map!!

Unread postby PLB » Thu Jun 28, 2012 7:03 am

The blue dot by the west lake is where a Slob of a buck has been pictured the last few seasons but never seen during a hunting situation. The red dots are where I gun hunted some last season. The green dots are where I have found his tracks the past two winters.Ignore the black dots in the NW section of the map. The west lake, road and east to the swamp edge are private, everything else is public.

Do you have any details about the buck pictures? Dates? How many times pictures of him were taken on different dates? Wind direction days of pictures? What time of day/night the pictures were taken? Direction of travel? Was bait used to capture the picture or was it set over a scrape? trail?

The buck was pictured every summer by the neighbors on the lake. It was at their cabin feeder. Come late summer he disappears from their camera and shows up again rut time until late Dec. when he sheds. Same pattern since 2007. This is an old buck.

Dave,
That picture shows a ton of transition. That buck could be anywhere. I think he is staying in the area and hopping around is the best option trying new spots every day. I would plan on hunting hard rut thru Dec near where he is seen if thats been a regular pattern.
I believe I would be concentrating on the areas that get the least human activity... My guess is this pig is not hiding in the middle of that woods, but probably in an area that is being over looked by every hunter that comes thru...

Dan, the dots you chose as potential buck bedding in my first map is that based on slight elevation changes and transition lines?? I will be checking on these soon....

Also is your blue lines you drew transition or something else?? Feel free to mark up my other map I posted. I'm curious because I've hunted there since 1995 but I welcome your insight! Thanks, Dave.....

I was just thinking the same thing, I was hoping an aerial would help clear things up but what a mess of an area you have there, no wonder it holds big bucks! I see a lot of these large spots in my area, seems like they haveunlimited bedding and tons of places to hide. I like Dan's idea, hunt where you think he is living a couple times and then jump around and see if you can't find him in another spot.

I hear ya Headgear!! My area is just so much swamp. I'm not just talking about this map either. miles and miles of swamp. It's very difficult to hunt effectively because they could be anywhere.

Mostly points of slightly higher elevation going into swamp, or elevation of the hills.

Dave,
I am hunting a simalar situation this year. A huge swamp a few miles across that is a bit of a drive from my home where a monster typical has been sighted by lots of hunters and farmers.
What I did is figure out where the buck was seen or photographed and looked for the best bedding spot in short distance. It took me an hour to walk out through the swamp to the spots I picked on a map, but there was a big worn bed in both spots I picked and chest high rubs... I am positive its the buck everybody has been talking about...
So, in your case, I would look at the area you know he uses 1st, and hunt my way out. I would likely hunt the time frame that matches his annual pattern.

I am in a similar situation as you two, 3 square miles of swamp and there is one or more pigs running around, biggest tracks I have ever seen. The hard part is I live 3 hours away so I don't have it scouted near as much as I should but there are some hot zones I have found that have me narrowing down the bedding areas. Still might take me 5+ years to get a good handle on the area.
