We Built A Couple Water Holes
We had a pretty busy weekend on the new land this weekend. We did a little youth turkey hunting, no birds though. I leased a backhoe, my buddy Jon operated it, he did an awesome job! We put in a driveway, a pad for a hunting camper, a ridge road, grubbed out a food plot, and built two water holes.
This is the first water (actually dirt, now) hole. We didn't find the nice red clay we wanted, but there is some clay in this soil, so hopefully it works. Now if we get some rain and try it out. ;
This is the second one we put in
The first hole is just off the field. We are putting a food plot in just up the ridge, and there is good bedding on the same side of this south facing slop.
The second hole is tucked into the woods, with the field above it, and a bedding area over to the side of this west facing ridge. Like I said, now we need some rain, hope they hold water. It sure is fun working hard and watching your dreams come true

is the pipe in the second picture for overflow in case the water gets too high or is it drawing water from another source? runoff?

Hey BackWoodsHunter, the pipe we put in is an overflow pipe. Just in case we do get a lot of water in a short amount of time hopefully the overflow pipe will do its job and drain the water out and away from the berm, so as not to wash the whole thing out.

Re: We Built A Couple Water Holes
hey nut its got water, but not like i was hoping, it actually had more during summer months last year, i think once the leaves come on it holds more then the sun doesnt hit it. guess ill find out, spring rains should help also. it is on a south facing slope. i put it on this slope because the point it is above is always a buck bedding point. and its somewhat secluded plus the fact that its in the center of my property helps also.

Re: We Built A Couple Water Holes
Well, even with all the rain this summer the new water holes had a hard time holding water, but a couple weeks ago they finally started. They do seem to be leaking a little though. Hopefully with time they will seal up good. I didn't take long for the deer tracks to show up there once they started holding
