mid-summer planting

Unread postby Rich M » Thu Jun 23, 2016 5:44 am

Due to along string of events, I have not planted yet and need to plant something. Farmer is gonna brush hog the area I want to plant come mid-July and I need to plant some kind of space holder - to keep the weeds down and allow for easier fall planting that will be in Sept.

What can I plant in 95-100 degree temps with spotty rain? Farmer says peas but deer will level them before they grow. Planting about 2 acres - 1 acre in field, 1 acre in roads.

Are you going back and bush hogging and discing the areas for planting in September? Or are you just overseeding then?

I have a Groundhog max and a 4 wheeler - hoping to avoid having to brush hog the second time (would end up using a weed whacker). Will "till" again come fall.

My suggestion is to go in and spray Round up immediately after the farmer cuts. Then go back and spray again in late August for any new growth.

With not being able to start until mid July, and then planning to till that ground again in September, there just isn't any real time period to be planting for.

Thwack could be right. If your in the south it might not be to late tho. In the north I've heard of guys planting buckwheat in spring then knocking it down in August for their fall annual plantings and its good for the soil. Another one they use is sun hemp. What they do is kill the buckwheat with round up in August then overseed their annuals. Then they knock the buckwheat over with a cultipacker. The dead buckwheat keeps the moisture in for germination. No tilling required

If you ever want a good read about food plots get Jeff sturgis' book about food plots. He gives excellent tips on everything for hunters planting. All his advice is for the guy with just an ATV and implements
