mystery solved?

Unread postby jigglestick » Fri Apr 02, 2010 10:44 am

last year and probably many other years and situations when I wasn't quite as observant,
I was walking about in the woods, scouting an area, and one of the observations I made was that there was no lack of tracks and other sign, like scrapes rubs and browse, I saw no scat.
I mean nothing. it didn't make sense to me. deer always .
don't matter where either.

there were a few attempts to answer this puzzle, nothing satisfied me as a proper answer.

today I might have litteraly stumbled upon the answer.
red squirrels I think...

I appollogize for the poor quality of video and hopefully it works here.
you will get the idea I think.

I'm not sure what your showing Jiggly. No audio on the vids.
Are you sure that ain't porcupine poo?

I think you found a porcupine den tree. They will poop and poop and poop some more. They look like deer poop but are a bit bigger and longer.

sorry for the audio blip.

well, it could be a porky den, but it's two feet off the ground.
the audio would have told you that I came across about a twenty pound pile of nuggets that appeared to be deer droppings, at the base of this tree. upon further inspection, I see that the source is this big hole in the crotch of this tree about two feet off the ground.
porky den?
I spose.
thought I just figured out one of the woods many mystery's.

as long as you mentioned it, we saw five porky's killing three different trees at another location today in about a half hour.

I'm gonna google porky pine .

"The porcupine produces droppings similar to those of deer. They may be about an inch long. In winter, the droppings have rough surfaceds and are irregular pellets, which are sometimes connected when food is relatively soft. In summer, the pellets are softer, more elongate, are often curved and are sometimes segmented. Droppings accumulate at entrances to crevice shelters or caves among rocks and in winter at the bases of trees where porcupines have fed for a long time."

Where I hunt Oak ridges are everywhere! Used to be when they were laden with acorns, there would be pawing and poop everywhere! Now you can literally walk an entire ridge and not see any poop! No poop, NO DEER!!! Deer love acorns over anything so if they aint pooping, they ain't there! 1995-2005 they were there! They are not anymore! 2006-2009 has gotten worse and worse by us! This winter and the foggy opening weekend in WI saved a few that are around though!

well in these cases, there are tracks.
no tracks, no deer. tracks, ...deer.

as bad as the deer population gets, you have two choices. keep hunting where there are "no deer" or move on and find some.
after years of bumper crops, it's easy to get spoiled by seeing multiple deer per sit.
we as hunters, fishers, will understand that we take the good years with the bad years.
just my opinion.
