Trail Camera/Mineral Lick Strategic Placement

Unread postby kwaldeier » Thu Aug 04, 2011 5:07 am

Before Dan's video came out i was having(and still am) trouble finding a good spot for my trail camera. My mineral lick was taken over by cows so i had to go else where. Even then all i had were cows. Next year i am going to try and fence off my mineral lick to keep the cows out and place it on the outer edge of the timber for less impact. I was just looking for some ideas for mineral licks for next year? Also looking for high travel areas where a trail camera would catch deer with little impact getting there. Thanks for any help guys!

Does the whole parcel have cows, or are they fenced out of certain areas?

Thats my question too. Can you mark on the map where the cows are fenced?

I would abandon the minerals if the cows are eating it, and put the camera on a scrape or in a funnel. Keep in mind where you think the bucks are bedding, where you plan to hunt those beds, and where the buck will go after leaving his bed... The last spot ( where the buck will go after leaving his bed ) is where you want the camera...
With that said, I have never done really well hunting in cow pastures... The cows seem to do a number on the bedding cover and bucks just don't seem to put up with it.

I think I would abandon the minerals and try putting some pre-orbital gland lure on an overhanging branch. I'm using the pre-orbital for the first time this year since it doesn't attract other hunters, plus the bucks like to keep tabs on each other so they seem to check out the overhanging branches that I'm marking...seems like a decent way to check inventory, so far.

I would start the mocks this week.... just keep em out on an edge with good over hanging branch. If you show me which way you are accessing I can give you a recommendation of where I would put them. Where you have the 1st one I don't think I would place it there, looks like the center of the property = too much intrusion going in to check it. I don't hunt where cows are pastured.... I have had them head but the tree I was in, surround me and moo at me, chase/follow me while walking to and from stands.... deer will walk thru them but it is not ideal

i will show you where i enter when i can get home. What would i need for a mock scrape? But you are right about it being in too far. Thats why i want to back out. Great spot with no cow interference but just to far in :( spot 2 has not had a buck this year :( i know they are in there though.
