Checking Acorns

Unread postby xpauliber » Thu Jun 16, 2011 5:14 am

Does anyone go out and check on their acorn crop in the summer and if so when? Most of the areas I hunt consist of vast laurel beds in the hills with tons of oaks, mostly reds. I know where a few secluded stands of white oaks are at. I plan on checking to see what trees will produce this year.

I've got a couple dozen oaks around my house, I usually let them tell me what kind of year it's going to be and when they start dropping.

I've seen red oaks dropping acorns the end of August on a drought year when the trees are stressed. Normally though its the beginning to middle of Sept. where we hunt. I usually grab the binos in late summer and glass up in the tree to see if there are acorns.

Same here. But sometimes I'm off in certain areas...... seems some trees are on a cycle different from others.
