04/09/11 Buck Bed

Unread postby Swampthing » Fri May 27, 2011 6:09 pm

Here is a cool buck bed I found a few weeks back. There are only 2 directions that a predator could access this bed .From due N and staight up south. He has water, cattails and a beaver dam to the East. And solid cattails to the west .He is totally secure West and East. And with him bedding on the little island he will spot anything coming North and South.

Here is the pic of the bed with a rub right in the bed.

Here is another bed pic

Here is a view from the bucks bed ,notice the big rub leaving the bed.

Neat post and bed any idea how you would hunt it?

I have been thinking a lot lately and was going to start a topic but it would have been confusing without an example. I am going to attach a question to this for the experts I hope thats alright. When you guys find a bed that is nearly impossible to hunt do you ever make the deer feel unsafe there hoping he relocates to a secondary bedding area that is more suitable to hunt? Kind of like stacking a bedding area I'd guess?

That's a great looking find / buck bedding area Swampthing. He has what I call "X-Factor" bedding where he can escape in multiple directions from the bed. In Pic # 5 I also see what appears to be an old rub on the first tree to the left of the dam, which may indicate years of use by the buck(s).

Great post! 8-)

Nice find swampthing!

You sure can try and stack a buck or bucks into a bedding area you can hunt. However I think you have to know the buck and all the bedding in an areas extremely well to do this. I think you would also have to be hunting a large area of public land because I would hate to push a buck onto some private land you can't hunt.

I think you know my answer... Yes.
But you need to know your bedding areas and the area in general fairly well to pull it off.

I was planning on hunting it with a North / Northeast wind. The only trees are the trees he,s bedding in,of course. So it will have to be a ground set-up ,I know of 2 more secondary beds North of him .But the only way I could push him there would be accessing his bed from the South. And all the ground South of him is PRIVATE. So my only option is this bed.

Here is the little island pic.

Here is an aerial view ,with where I plan to set-up.

Right where is says exit. That is the start of the beaver dam(light blue line). That is the only way in. Its a 1/2 mile walk to that point.
