Wind finder / Leeward ridge identification

Unread postby Adam B » Tue May 10, 2022 3:50 pm

If there’s two ridges out of this cove, but looking at wind finder daily shows that it’s constantly switching directions, how does one determine which ridge is leeward and which one is windward? There’s definitely good bucks and good sign in the valley below both sides.

Can’t tell what the scale is and how it lays out but the wind just swirls in those kinds of coves under 3 major wind directions if it’s 2 ridges connecting to a main ridge. But both secondary ridges will have a predominantly leeward side just look up the prevailing wind for that area for the fall.

Thank you for your response. Where would I look up the prevailing wind at?

Windward is side of the ridge the wind is hitting first. Leeward is the opposite side with the wind blowing down the hill.

I thought Windy ty or Windfinder had the feature to see the yearly direction percentages but I cant find it now. Youll have to search or maybe check weather underground. I think its called a Wind Rose Chart but I honestly cant remember.

Uh, good question. Lol, I do it the old school way by just keeping tabs on the weather in the locations I hunt or plan to hunt. I am pretty sure weather underground has that kind of historical data but I have never had to look it up.

I think Seaz mentions where to get historical wind data in these videos. Part 2 if I recall, but if you haven't seen them they are worth a watch for sure.

Scott, thanks for posting those links. I really like how he stepped through his settings on Caltopo in video 1.

All credit goes to Seaz. Happy to help when I can though.

He has a podcast too. Definitely worth checking out if you haven't. Most underrated podcast in the hunting industry, IMO.

Good luck this season.
