DNR swamp clear cuts

Unread postby Acer18 » Sat Apr 20, 2019 12:35 pm

Was out doing some scouting today, noticed the dnr had recently clear cut some areas in the swamp along side the road. Imagine my surprise when I kept finding 1 acre or so sized clear cuts up to 1.5 miles back in the swamp (hate to be the poor sucker that got that job). The clear cut pictured ended about 15yds from a small island loaded with buck beds. Jumped a good bodied one out of it and 3 does on the transition b4 that. I assume they are cutting it for habitat diversity? Anybody experience something similar? Trees in this swamp are primarily black cherry and black thorn. Very very few big trees, like under 25 spotted in the 3.5 miles I covered today. Maybe trees are stunted and they think opening it up will encourage growth (idk if it works like that)? Any thoughts?

I think you probably nailed it. Habitat diversity. Maybe the chance for new growth to spring up.

I know clear cuts in big timber can be pretty good. Hopefully it translates to swamps as well..

Probably for management...sometimes a good clearcut or fire is what a property needs to reboot it. It'll defineately change things up getting some food in there and change movement a little...

My ankles hurt looking at that picture
I’d guess habitat diversity as well, it’s normally for the timber value down here though
