Iowa Scout Trip

Unread postby BKMississippi » Tue Dec 18, 2018 10:22 am

My cousin and I have enough points to get drawn for Iowa next year so naturally we're really excited. We usually do our scout trips in mid February but we've never taken a trip that far north. Is mid February too early due to snow or will it be hit or miss?

TIA

I'm a state to the west of Iowa but in my experience it's hit or miss regarding snow. I've she'd hunted in mid Feb in just a hoodie and no snow. Other years there is snow cover for most of the month.

Very hit and miss but I'd say it will likely be no snow. I'm in east central Iowa.

If your scouting bluff country in snow/ice make sure you bring some ice creepers. Those hills can get pretty treacherous. I found out the hard way my first time scouting there in late February.

If it’s me I’d probably play it safe and go in March. Last thing you want is an unexpected snow storm to cover up all that sign. I’d rather scout a little on the late side than a little on the early side.

So due to flooding issues and foul weather in general, we've yet to make our trip. We're now planning for the last weekend in April. I know it's a lot later than prime scouting time, but at least we'll be able to get our boots on the ground.

Only problem is turkey hunting is open. Something to be aware of to avoid conflict or safety issues.
