Looking for freshly dropped fawns

While out in the woods turkey hunting or scouting make sure you keep an eye out for those freshly dropped fawns. Areas that they maybe dropping sooner than others could give you an heads up on those areas that does come into estrous a little earlier than others. Subtract a round about 200 days from that sighting. I have one location where I’ve seen fawns about a week earlier than other locations, last week of October cruising pics in that area kind of confirms it. Could be an edge for you...

Earliest I have found one is the third week of May with the bulk of them late May around here in southern WI and the first two weeks of June up north. Easy to pinpoint peak fawn drop because the yearlings from last year start getting hit by vehicles after momma chases them away to drop her new fawns.

I know what you mean about early estrous. Seen it myself a full two weeks before peak rut. It’s more common than people think. One area I saw chasing early October a few years in a row exactly one month earlier than typical rut. Pretty sure that doe got killed as it never happened again. Guys think the breeding is condensed during a very short period but it’s actually a bell curve stretched over a few months.

I got a trail camera picture of a spotted fawn on a farm I hunt in Northeast Ohio this year on March 25th 2018. I got several pictures of the fawn and what I assume was her mother not long after the fawn wondered away from the camera. The fawn looks to be a couple days old and in good health. That would put her conception date around the first week of September. I can’t post a picture on it on here because of my lack of tech savvy but I know several of you guys follow me on Facebook I’ll post a picture on my Facebook page. Mike perry Waterford PA

i have seen early rutting myself i think it might have to do with the weird weather the last couple years. i think it might throw deer in circles and cause a trickle rut it also could have to do with available food and stress.
