Bear Spray

Unread postby JMax1978 » Thu Mar 08, 2018 3:31 am

Anybody else carry ibear spray n the woods when scouting? I always have a firearm on me. But after a close encounter 6 years ago with a sow and two cubs, I started carrying bear spray when hitting the woods when bears are not in season.. UDAP makes a nice setup that straps across your chest.

I've thought about it, but I'm so used to being in the bigwoods in bear country. We only have black bears and I'm not too worried about them. I suppose I'd be more worried about a cougar more than anything. But I don't carry anything for protection. I just walk with confidence and watch my surroundings.

I was stepping through a deadfall last day of muzzleloader season last year and "it" growled at me.I carry a pistol. Besides, I've heard the stories about bear scat that smells like pepper!!

I never carry spray while scouting in bear country. Only time I have carried any was when actually bear hunting when encounters at bait stations are common or when hiking in Yellowstone just because of grizzlies.

The trick is to bring a buddy who's slow and lazy. Then you just need to out run him when the time comes.

you dont have to outrun the bear.......

this actually happened to me. i was in the woods with my girlfriend when we stumbled across a sow and cub. i faced the sow as she snapped her jaws and huffed at us. i told my girlfriend to slowly back away. i backed away still facing the sow for about 30 yds. i turned around and my girlfriend was long gone. lol

grizzly country yes, otherwise I don’t carry it. You can always avoid areas that are most likely to have bears that time of year.

Not for black bears. If I wanted to carry something I would take a pistol. Most the time I just watch them go by and enjoy the experience. We have lots of bears so it is pretty common to see them and get close if you are in the woods.
Some do. Some don't. I just might...
