Which Mapping Tools?

Unread postby BKMississippi » Tue Mar 06, 2018 3:57 am

I was just wondering which mapping tools y'all are using? I mainly use three but I'm always up for trying to be for efficient. I'm interested in seeing which maps you use and what they offer. Thanks

The three I use are:

Cal Topo
This lets me overlay and blend
http://www.caltopo.com

Google Earth
I use this for the time stamped images because they allow me to determine evergreen from hardwood, sometimes allow me to see a road or trail in winter image, and lastly I'll check multiple dates on the same area to get a feel of whether or not an area holds water during the same seasons every year.

The MS Dept Wildlife Fisheries & Parks site
I'm sure most states have access in some way, but if you don't, you can use this tool. I use it for aerial and two different topos, as well as measuring line of distance and area. Cal Topo can do more but I'm familiar with this site so it's easier for me to navigate.

Aside from what has already been mentioned, I also like Hillmap.com. I like how you can view topo/aerial in a side by side format.

I like this one.

https://mappingsupport.com/p/gmap4.php

Gives me many map options all on one site. Toggle the map selections at the bottom right of the screen.

I only use my smart phone, right now i am using huntstand and really like it for route tracking with GPS, and marking way points, as well a easily rotating through my properties. It's a cool app. The time of photos differ based on map location, from all green to bare...so i use a couple other apps for time lapse. Google Earth is green shots, and an app called Map and Draw works with Maps to give me brown photos. I also like it because i can pretend I'm John Madden and draw all over the screen!
Does anyone have any other Android apps they like?

On the top of the screen, click view and it should be like the 5th one down if my memory is correct.

Bing maps can have some incredible aerials. In my area it is 10x better than google but doesn’t have any of the features google does. Can also overlay topos in google earth which eliminates the need for a lot of the other ones mentioned.

County gis is also good if you can figure out how to use it. Not user friendly, especially if you aren’t tech savvy. Personally I think it is the ultimate tool that few utilize. Can get 2’ contours, public land, property info, you name it. In the right county this is all you would need. Well that, the snipping tool and some kind of drawing program.

I only have access to it on my laptop. Neither my iPhone or iPad have it. I'll see what version it is and let you know. It's just an option on the top left. It shows it in the form of a horizontal line with the dates that a particular area was photographed.

I use HuntStand app, onX maps and some google earth.

I love onX maps. You have to pay for the subscription but to me it’s totally worth it. I have found public land on there that I never even knew was public and with some follow up wax able to confirm they were indeed public.

+1 for OnX Maps. Especially if you are going to be hunting multiple states or areas where you need to know the exact property lines. You gotta pay a little for it, but it’s worth it’s weight in gold. Been using it in the southwest for a few years now. It can really show you some overlooked areas. Using OnX along with google earth, and you can really narrow things down in a hurry.

I switched to this after I heard Dan mention it and love it. It's the best mapping program I've used so far to get details of an area and switch between views. I also use the sketch tool on the tablet which helps greatly. Since I use a GPS, I use Garmin Basecamp to import my data and analyze them.

I do the same with Basecamp. Every day my tracking data and scouting waypoints get downloaded from my GPS. Always cool viewing my walking tracks and any sign I found overlayed on aerials or topos. Really helps to put the entire picture together.

I use google earth pro, backcountry navigator, and terrain navigator pro. Although I probably should get rid of backcountry navigator on my mobile and sync my mobile and home computer together with terrain navigator pro
Some do. Some don't. I just might...
