scouted this island today need advice

Unread postby Rob loper » Tue Feb 06, 2018 1:42 pm

i scouted this island today i think i found a pretty out of the way sweet spot there was not many rubs some little knee high ones but i know that means about diddley squat
there is a huge scrape where marked beds on all points and this island is about an 45 minute walk through straight cattails and just nasty nasty wet muck and a 30 minute walk just to the edge of cattails from truck
i got a pretty good idea where to set up but wind and thermals i was wondering about the prevailing wind early season south west then by end october its north westerly
any advice on how to setup or deal with the wind? or thermals it was swirling in there today coming straight out of the west there are beds on all points and a few here and there
the huge scrape in the middle is big as a car hood lol . huge tracks too .the the bed to the right 2nd one down from top is huge and full of hair there was actually 2 beds full of hair on
this point im wondering if i should run and gun this or preset sticks for hunting it the main trail seems to hug the south side of island cause of course there is pond and large water mass to the north the middle of the island is full of high grasses a couple of small oaks too . im pumped i found this spot
i dont want to screw this spot i believe its a good one
phone pic is all i have thanks

Wow that looks good man. Three questions that came to mind for me:

1.Where can you access it from without being busted? What side do you come in from? Is it oriented with North at the top of the screen?

2.How long is the island?

3. When do you suspect they’re bedding here? Early season? Rut? All year?

Here’s hoping the guys that know what they’re doing can answer your questions.

And what app is that? It looks awesome. I like that it gives different marks for bedding. ScoutLook uses the same marks for everything.

In my opinion I wouldn’t preset at stand on the island. I’d run and gun. This is my reasoning and thoughts.

On this island, it looks like a sanctuary or a safe haven for deer. If it’s tough to get to which it seems, nobody goes back there. If you preset a stand, the deer will adjust to it and move around it. Not by it. Especially mature bucks. In my experience of what I know and heard, if you are in an area where mature bucks hide out where there isn’t sign of people, the bucks tolerate very little. If you setup a stand, you risk pushing the bucks out of there.

But only one way to find out.

1 . i can only access from south from fields
2 . the island is from west to east 250 yards long and from north to south 200 yards long can be snuck onto pretty easily as long as i take my time
3 . i think they are bedding from early October .we have a muzzleloader season i think 2nd week October so there is early pressure put on them
its a 30 minute walk from truck to marsh then a 45 minute walk to island . its very remote
they really could be bedding there all year but not sure ag all around so alot of food around

Just "spitballing" here but I'm guessing your route will have to look something like this. You'll obviously need the wind in your face or from the W. You'll also have to be careful not to bump those deer in the satellite beds.

You may already be familiar with this website: https://www.windfinder.com/?utm_source= ... 70/13.4000

I have found it extremely helpful. Zoom in on the map and find your area then click on a weather station nearby. Then click "Forecast" and then "Weather Statistics" for your area and it will give you prevailing wind directions for every month of the year based on years of data.

This is my area. Showing that the wind during November almost always blows from the North and sometimes from the SSE.

Hope this helps. Love this stuff.

This is essentially why most of us hunt 100% mobile every set, sometimes the wind is just off for that tree you pick out in the spring or once you get in there you see fresh sign in a new spot and need to adjust last minute. Northwoods you should checkout a an old thread about sanctuaries, a very good read. Better schedule some time, lots o pages.
