Putting a Topo on a GPS

Unread postby perchsoup » Thu Oct 26, 2017 8:58 am

Anyone have experience putting a topo map on a GPS? I was thinking about upgrading my GPS to a better model where you get a topo loaded onto it but I was researching online and found you can build and install smaller gps maps on my Garmin etrex 10. Does anyone have experience with building and extracting a topo map for this?

I gave it ago the other night. Turns out the etrex 10 will only work with a .img file. I was able to create other topos but not in the right file format. So, now I am searching to find a topo in .img format and small enough to fit on my gps's limited memory. I will report back if I am successful.

I have the Garmin Montana "T" model that comes with the topo maps on it. I've downloaded satellite imagery through the Garmin BirdsEyeView which overlays on the topo maps. Since I hunt almost exclusively private land I also downloaded the land ownership maps for my state through ONX maps which overlays on top of everything else. Works really really well.

There are free topo apps for your phone and they work pretty well, maybe not as good as a high powered GPS but almost everybody has a phone these days.

Hi this is my first post here stumbled upon the Beast

Hoping to nail my first buck, had several near misses

I own an Etrex 10 myself searched high and low for the solution after finally buying a GPS unit

here is a video that worked for me

The guys voice is a little mono tone but his videos worked

You can google a convertor to change a jpg file to img is how I did it

Hope this helps
