Yay found my second primary scrape today.

Unread postby Tennhunter3 » Wed Aug 23, 2017 12:29 pm

I was scouting a new area today and 90 yards northeast from buck bedding was a large all year worked primary scrape about the size of a small car under overhanging limbs.

Only the second one I have ever found I'm excited to hunt it.

The bad news is it's down low in a bottom so falling afternoon thermals may be tough to hunt. It might be best as a am sit during the rut.

Are these big primary scrapes usually down low in elevation like this? I mostly scout the top 1/3 and I haven't found any yet.

Beasts with more experience can expand on this but my thought would be that since scrapes are a way to communicate, do you think the higher areas around it have bedding and then once the thermals drop, the deer are dropping down and hitting the scrape as they head out and possibly as they're coming back to their beds on the early morning?

The ones I have seen and know of all had similar characteristics in their locations.
-swirling wind currents
-thermal hubs(deer can pick up scent from essentially any direction)
-fertile soils(no hard clays)
-small openings in thick cover, within 100 yards of ag fields

I'm sure they occur in other areas, but the above have been commonalities with the 1/2 dozen or so I know of. One of the Eberhart books talks about them alot.

The first one I ever found was up high in between 2 buck bedding areas.
I do not think elevation matters to these primary scrapes.

I was walking downwind of the buck beds looking for their j hook and walked right to the scrape.

These type of scrapes are very rare its just luck to find one.

The similaritys between these 2 scrapes are overhanging limbs, near bedding,
are at meeting points of trails.

I have no idea if bucks will travel down to it in pm.
I have never hunted scrapes like this before I'm sure several of the experienced beast know better then me how bucks use these type of scrapes.
