Pine Plantations and Bedding

Unread postby Twenty Up » Mon Mar 27, 2017 1:47 pm

I know this has been touched on somewhat but I recently uncovered some mature & immature buck beds that made me second-guess my previous opinions on bucks bedding in pine plantations.

While turkey hunting I bumped a lone deer in a stand of pines, probably in their 6-8yr of growth (so 10-15ft tall) it's a thick area that has native grass & briars between the trees. As I went to check out the bed it turned out to be a mature buck bed, a primary one at that. As I recorded everything into my CalTopo I realized that for the wind this bed was (NW) it blew directly over the satellite beds (also a NW wind). There is also doe bedding to the East of these beds.

Something that also caught my attention was that the primary buck bed was located in very close proximity to the trees that were uncut, it looked almost identical to what Dan preaches with his Marsh Bedding.

Figured I would share my findings with you guys and maybe help some others out because I know hunting stands of pines specifically can be very difficult. Also thought it was pretty cool how the bedding was so related between pines & marsh.

Pics are in my journal & I won't include any topo pics because it is on public land that I'm currently hunting :D

The more you look at bedding, the more you will see the similarities. Even in areas that seem a lot different than each other.

Twenty Up, is this flat terrain or rolling hills you observed this?

Relatively flat farm & swamp country. Maybe 100ft elevation at the most. The pines are on a "hill top" but the elevation change is probably 40' in this particular area so it's more swamp bottom than anything
