Found this out in the marsh today..

Unread postby Lastcast#1 » Fri Feb 03, 2017 1:19 pm

Image

I have been doing quite a bit of scouting lately on Michigan public..Just returned from a 5 day scouting mission/last chance bowhunt in Ohio..

Anyhow , I found this deadhead today..Basket 8..His rack was wedged into this cottonwood as shown in the pic..Base of the tree is his bed. Well, maybe 'his' bed. I am guessing this deer had been shot and not recovered. Few bones layin in the bed from critters doing thier thing..Guessing he died hanging from his rack which was about chin high...Disturbing, interesting , cool, and a wierd find..

Found a good number of beds and 2 or 3 quality buck beds today under u guessed it, lone large trees in an ocean of cattails..Hope to get some pics and ?s posted up from my Ohio trip soon...

Regards

Chad

Crazy. Possible he got stuck like that and couldnt get unstuck? Would be a horrible way to go

It's a cool find, but a bummer it just wasn't a couple of sheds.

Yeah that's awful if he died like that. Maybe another hunter found the rack didn't want it and put it there? I see no old scarring on the tree if he struggled to get out.I have walked past little racks in the woods and put them in trees. Just thinking

Thought about that to Hawthorne..Hair and bones in the bed. Skull still had hair on it..So it wasnt a long time ago..It was really hung up tight. Who knows I guess....Anything is possible I suppose.

A buddy of mine found a 150" class buck dead with his horns wedged in a tree a few years back. That would be a rough way to die for sure.

I usually put the racks in trees when I find them. Not sure completely why very rarely go back or get a salvage tag

Interesting! I'm wondering if someone found it and hung it there for a euro mount but didn't want to deal with the stink at home?? (Then planned on retrieving it later)

On more than one occasion driving on the freeway I have seen deer stuck in fences. Like they tried running through them and got caught up and couldn't pull themselves out. Total shame but I guess that's how it goes

Well they lock antlers in big fights on occasion. Why not while thrashing on a tree!

Could'a just been weak from a wound of some kind and just happened to fall there and then got stuck too.

If this was in a hard to get to area I'd rule out it being put there by another human. Especially if it was wedged in pretty tight.

Dan doesn't like the words always and never when it comes to mature bucks, but!

There's ALWAYS plenty of mysteries that we will NEVER find out the true answer to. Out in the deer's stomping grounds!!!!
