I read another article by Jeff Sturgis of Whitetail Habitat Solutions today that made a lot of sense. He was talking about winter scouting and figuring out what was fall (during season sign) vs. what is actual winter sign. In the article he talks about understanding rubs a little more and determining when they were made. We all know that bucks rub to shed their velvet but the majority are made pre and post rust when searching for the 1st and the last estrous doe. He talks about the shavings being on top of the leaves or under the leaves which will kind of give you a time of year as to when the rub was actually made. In theory if it is an early season rub the shavings will be under the leaf litter which is a rub made before pre rut. Most areas (not all) the majority of the leaves have dropped by early November and if you are finding rubs in the winter time that have shavings on top of the leaves it is more than likely a rub made pre rut, rut, or post rut. Which leads me to this, do you think this information could also give some insight to when a bed/bedding area is being used? I mean some beds are only used at certain times of the year as we all know, and i thinking using this information could give some insight on the time of year a certain bed or bedding area should be targeted.
Bed with early season rub=shavings under the leaves area should be targeted in September early October.
Bed with rut type rub=shavings on top of the leaves should be targeted through out November.
Beds with both scenarios could possibly be primary bedding and not time frame specific.
I know that not all beds have a rub right in the bed or even next to it, but the rubs you find say 50-150 yards out.
Just curious of what you all may think as to if this being plausible. The way I look at is a beast is slowly making his way to his predetermined tree to hunt a bed/bedding area and along the way he runs into fresh opened up rubs he knows that bed/bedding are is occupied or as been not too long ago. In theory this just kinda gives you a heads up for the following season as to when to target an area.

Re: Reading Rubs
"IF" you can actually age the rub correctly, yes, it could give you insight on when the bed is being used.
