Snow Shoes

Unread postby tgreeno » Thu Feb 02, 2017 4:10 am

I was thinking about getting some snow shoe for scouting this time of year. Does anyone use them? Like or dislike? Sizes or types?

Thanks in advance...I have never used them, but thought in the deeper snow they may work well for scouting.

I have the cabelas brand medium size. It's fun to snowshoe. There's a technique to it. You'll figure it out after walking in them awhile. I only got to use mine once the winter of 13-14. We had record setting snow falls that year and it never melted like it usually does. Havnt had to use them since. Another thing I recommend is a trekking pole. Only one is needed but some use two

Once the snow gets over a foot deep I break out the snowshoes. It's actually a lot of fun and I really enjoy the solitude of exploring the deep snow.

I have a pair of Cabela's Alaskan Outfitters but don't see them on the website anymore. Looks like these replaced them.

I haven't used them for scouting, but I've had some military surplus shoes from fleet farm. They are pretty light and dirt cheap compared to a lot of shoes out there. Probably not great for scouting around in super thick brush, but for covering country they're great.

When the snow gets deep I use them 3 to 4 times per week. My advice is to get as big of pair as you can

You might check your local Ocean State Job Lot. I know that I see them every winter. They come as a set with two poles. They are around $40.00 IIRC. They might be worth a shot if you are looking for something to try them out.

I have never used them so I have no first hand experience with them. Other members may have more to add.

I use Tubbs. Not sure if the company is still around but they've stood up well since I've had them. They were American made I believe.
