try searching caltopo and on the first page Schubox1265 has a thread called cyber scouting and mapping to the next level-caltopo. There is a bunch of other DEM stuff on there also, hope that helps

back again...go into caltopo click "add "on top left, box will pop up, choose DEM layer, name the layer (ex. top 1/3), click elev box, choose what elev. to what elev., pick a color, then click add "rule", then save and your top 1/3 should be colored, it worked for me and I'm NOT a tech guy  There is more cool stuff in caltopo , a great tool. You can even go after top 1/3 north slopes or opposite according to the wind...etc.
Again, I'm just figuring this out but the other beasts have so dig in.

open caltopo
select add new layer
select add dem shading

check the boxes you want under add a new rule

keep in mind aspect is for different direction shading otherwise you get 360 degree.

so if you want 1 - 5 degree slope check slope fill in 1 then 5
if you want elevation check mark the elevation button and fill in start and ending elevation range.

Aspect is a 360 degree circle 0 - 90 is NE to E 90 - 270 E to SE 270 - 315 S - SW 315 - 360 W - NW

After completed click add rule on bottom - give it a name and save it.

You can go back and edit it using the pencil icon if it is not correct.
