Who starts scouting right after the season?
It's looking like a warm winter is ahead of us that means not a lot of snow.
It is very hard to scout here in NY until May normally, This time last year we had 18" of snow on the ground.
Who will be out scouting before the snow starts to pile up or will you be waiting til spring? Why do you choose one or the other.

I'm in Texas so it's a good bit different, but mine starts the first week of January. I am very much a newbie, so I can use all the scoutin time I can get.

As much ground as Dave covers, I'm surprised he has time to sleep!

Hunting here in Michigan this time of year sucks anyway, so the other day I scouted a new piece of public. 6 stands and 2 cams on about 40 acres, pure Michigan.

That's pretty much my experience as well. Still trying to find those hidden spots...

I didn't see he was from Texas also. That makes it easier to scout in the winter instead of the summer when it's 110. Lol. I have the opposite problem. Cold temps and deep snow. Also in the winter the snow will preserve deer scat and tracks and consolidate the sign to certain areas and int he spring the deer scat can be every step on certain deer runs up here.

How much snow are you talking. Where I live we average 130" of snow per year. This year I'll predict will be below average. The areas I hunt are unmaintained roads so I won't be able to even drive to these areas once the snow pack gets deep. My dad and I went to one spot in particular in April and there was still 20 inches of in melted snow on the road it was a wasted trip. The weekend after that we went to another spot and it had snow drifts that were over the knee and the snow average mid shin throughout the entire spot and this was in early April. So tracking them early in the winter would be better than in late.
When you track these deer are you tracking them til you catch up to it or to a bed? What is your goal of tracking hoof prints?

Re: Who starts scouting right after the season?
I hunt till the end if I still have a buck tag and then post season scouting starts immediately after. If I fill my buck tag earlier in the season I do nothing but in-season scouting as I have no desire to kill any does.

Re: Who starts scouting right after the season?
I'm always scouting. If the season is open, I don't scout when there are cars in the lot. This is mainly a respect thing, but regardless, very few are hunting this time of year. Get out and take advantage of this nice weather!
