Northwoods scouting 12/11/15
One of the things that I want to improve on this year is the amount and the quality of scouting that I do, and I am also thinking that If I have in mind that I want to share my scouting trips on the beast, I will slow down and document my scouting trips with more detail. I left Merrill today at 6:00 am and made the hour and a half trip to Boulder Junction,I Had gotten permission to hunt a forty acre parcel in the middle of October of this year but with tagging out on October 25 I had never gotten a chance to hunt it. The one day that I got to scout the land I softly bumped an albino buck from his bed which was really cool so I set a camera on a well used trail going to his bed.
I scouted the land again today but nothing is really jumping out at me especially being land locked again it never fails It always looks really good on the other side of the property line. I packed up and drove over to some large state land so I could stretch my legs. I had planned on walking until what looked like a beaver pond and then I would walk around a very long point and just see where the sign and the topography took me. I quickly cut a large set of tracks but lost them due to the quickly melting snow.
I had walked for a while without seeing any sign when I started to notice droppings, I normally would not have thought much of this but singingbridge had said in his pod cast that he related large dropping to mature bucks. Well let me tell ya these turds were huge 3/4 to 1" long pellets
So I started to follow what looked like a ghost trail and bam another pile of large pellets this went on for approx. 100 yards when I came across a rub and a scrape with old rubs everywhere I looked.
At this point I got that hair on the back of my neck feeling and I knew that I was close to his bedroom I got down on one knee to see below the underbrush and I saw legs raise from a bed. I then walked up to his bed and could basically see nothing it is so thick that he must use this bed because it is so secluded and thick that nothing can penetrate the area without him knowing is my only conclusion. I followed his exit trail to its first fork and picked a tree one stick high but I can shoot both trail at 25 yards.
overall a great day spent in the woods now I just need to find 50 more of these spots.

I spend quite a bit of time in Boulder Junction mostly fishing and snowmobiling. Very cool you got to see one of the albino deer in the area since I have yet had the opportunity. They were quite common at one time up there and if you do a search on YouTube you can see some really cool videos.
The hunting is tough up there for sure but there are some great bucks in the area. The deer population in town is ridiculous but outside town they are actually very hard to find so you are already ahead of the game. The locals tell me the wolves pushed much of the deer into the safety of the town but the last few years the wolves are getting more brazen and snapping them up on the edges.
Good luck to you up there and hope you can get on some good ones. Beautiful country up there and the scenery alone is worthy of some treestand time.

Cool!!
Are you also measuring stride length and stride width?
The Benoits always mention this but I've never seen any actual dimensions!!
Being a carpenter I tend to relate better to actual measurements for comparisons. My four fingers measure 3". The Benoits mention tracks that a .270 or 30-06 fit across. My .270 cartridges measure 3 1/4"
Looking forward to more. My bout with Lyme disease has me pretty much house bound and not being able to get out and figure some of this stuff out on my own is driving me nuts!!

I have been a sponge with the Benoit stuff lately.
8"-12" between left and right tracks with a 24"+ walking stride is considered to be made by a mature buck. The rifle rounds mentioned in the track width are a dead giveaway.

Where did you find that. I have Big Bucks the Benoit Way! But I didn't quite get all the way through it before I started having real bad movements again.
I have my older brother working on a special book holder. Need to bug him again so I can start reading again. I have a couple other new books I haven't started yet either.

Pretty sure it's in that one too also in Benoit Bucks and for sure in How To Bag The Biggest Buck Of Your Life.

How do they measure the stride? I've seen toe to toe or heel to heal. Also toe forward to heal. This was from a couple different books on tracking all animals. They only gave average dimensions for each species.

I'm far from an expert and just learning myself but the little experience I have had has been measuring toe to toe. The 24" walking stride is a minimum and I thought I read they tracked and killed some huge bucks that were up to 36"

Good work Bbostrom! You've already identified 2 buck bedding areas. I like the fact that you followed sign to find that second buck. Be sure to study those beds on your aerials and topos and then search for other areas that line up with similar features...that will help you in finding those next 50 bedding areas!

I haven't been measuring stride lenght but after reading this I think that it is another tool that I should be using thanks. Best of luck with your battle with Lyme disease
