MI Public Land In-season Scouting Help

Unread postby d_rek » Wed Nov 04, 2015 3:48 am

I posted in this in the deer hunting thread but didn't get any answers...

First time post long time lurker. Looking for some public land advice for a blind freelance hunt to hopefully get a freezer deer as the private properties I have access to just aren't producing this year.

Here's the area i'm targeting. I can hunt north or south of the road upto the river. Prevailing winds are westerly (SSW). I have a few ideas of where I might setup but where do you setup and why?

Thanks,
d_rek

There is a good looking saddle ENE of your red dot. Between the large upper case 'E' and the 700'line.

East of your red dot the river bends south. Hunt between that river bend and the bottom of that hillside. Just south of the '5' in the 625 mark. If you can access from river that is a dynamite spot.

In a north wind I would suspect bedding to the north of the two track. I have seen this alot where the deer will bed close to the typical access and monitor traffic. The 675' hillside would be good for cruising this time of year in a ssw wind if you can find a good crossing in the draw by the north property line.

Is that hard to access public land across the river? If it is and you can get there do it.

I was thinking any of those ravines where they level off toward the river would be good. Here is a close up of the saddle you mentioned.

Here's a view from bing aerial facing east toward the river toward that spot... looks like maybe foot trails? I'm not sure.

It's public land east and west of the river. The land across the river is easily accessible from a main road and I can see many foot trails and two tracks. It is a popular area for hikers.
