Topo vs edge transitions?

Unread postby johndeere506 » Thu Sep 17, 2015 1:35 am

How do you rate the 2? Most places I hunt, the edge changes/transition lines provide the most buck activity, the have only small topo changes. In areas with some or lots of topo change, I'd guess edge matters less? Which is more relevant to you, or seek a combination of both at all times?

Both. The best ones have multiple things going on.

Yup, having both together or in close proximity is usually a gold mine.

always go with the multiple - creats good transition areas - cover - escape - food -edge habitat - water - all equels one thing - more bucks

Whichever is more defined in a given area will produce more predictable movement. As was said, overlapping is even better.

It depends on which type of property you have and which is more pronounced determinant of travel, terrain or cover? For me most of the the military crest of my ridges are transition from pines on top to hardwoods falling in the bottoms. The bedding is many times on this transition. Sometimes it's in the hardwoods if there is a military crest further down the ridge, sometimes it's sort of on top in the pines. The most pronounced trail on the property is 2/3 up the ridge.
The next question is are u rut hunting or bed-feed hunting? Kurt transitions can be good or terrain.. It's sort of random, but whichever has the most sign/ best doe activity. Feed-bed hunting, you have to be more specific hunting a nice transition or terrain funnel 400 yrds from the bedding makes it very unlikely to kill a mature buck. It's all about where he is specifically feeding or bedding and you gotta find the happy medium. It can be either or both as others have stated. But the big obvious rut funnels are not as good usually outside of the rut. Those are for cruising bucks not safety cautious bucks that wait on the cover of darkness so they can eat safely...
