A scouting day surprise

Unread postby Zona » Mon Jul 27, 2015 6:49 am

I spent the weekend pulling cams off mineral sites. At one particular site I was just about to view the pics on the card when I glanced to my left and saw a 300lb+ bear heading to the water hole 20 yards away. I have many pics of this guy, but it was one heck of a rush to see him in person. I apologize in advance for the shaky video. It's hard to hold a cell phone steady and fumble for your knife at the same time.

I love close encounters with bears, they are amazing animals. I'm sure you won't forget your encounter anytime soon!

It was a pure adrenaline rush! I usually don't hunt bear, but the possibility of getting one with my bow gives me motivation to go after one. Lots of bear on PA this year.

I don't know why they have a separate bow season for bear, I wish they would open them for the regular deer bow season. Could have drilled a good one up there last year. Would have made the trip of a lifetime to kill a good buck and good bear the same week with the bow.

We are lucky in that our bear season overlaps part of the early archery season. They just extended our second bear season to overlap with our two week shotgun deer season this year so that should increase the bear kill this year

No baiting or dogs though.

We have some management areas that overlap bear with our firearm deer season.

I don't know if it is just a coincidence, but I have found multiple bears bedding in areas I suspect a buck to be using.

Interesting. I will keep that in mind this season. I have never really targeted them specifically and we have a limited population of bears. Our yearly harvest is around 200.

Great. I love close bear encounters. I've had a couple this year and was fortunate enough to give my wife and son one a few weeks ago. They are still talking about it! Glad you got some video. Awesome!

Like others have said it never gets old!

I agree PK. I think in time they might open it all archery season. I hope so at least

Cool.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.
