Not seeing many deer in the beans

Unread postby mheichelbech » Sun Jun 28, 2015 3:52 pm

Do soybeans need to grow to a certain height before deer start really eating them? Not seeing many deer in them yet and the ones I do see don't appearto be eating the leaves much.

Yep BassBoysLLP hit the nail om the head. It's a smorgasbord out there now. The fawns are very small right now so mom kind of keeps the fawns in cover. That is also part of the reason. In August those beans will get hit much harder.

I went for ride this week in farm country. I did'nt see any deer in the bean fields. Saw most of them in short crp type fields feeding. Lots of wild clover this year.

The later it gets into summer the drier and woodier a lot of browse gets. That's when they really hammer the beans.

Soybeans are being hammered by me right now... they came off of alfalfa and clover and now are pounding soybeans

Actually seeing more this past week...including my target buck!

Can anyone hazard a guess...is it possible to get a sense of the deer population by what you seen in the beans during July/August? If you only see 3 or4 and no bucks would that indicate that it isn't going to be a good area to hunt?

I have 10+ different bucks on cam so far this year. I've only seen 4 in the ag fields near the cams. So, based on my personal experience, I wouldn't totally abandon an area unless you've done regular glassing and shining and still aren't seeing the caliber of buck you are after.
