Dirty Spring

Unread postby BigCedarJack » Fri Jun 19, 2015 6:40 pm

I found a place on the topo that looked really promising and decided to go check it out. The spot was a long rigorous hike to approximately the midway point of a mountain. There was a small hump off to the side of a large 2/3 saddle that afforded a small flat spot with steep terrain on one side, and mild terrain growing a thicket on the other. Along with finding deer there when I got there and lots of hot sign. I also found what appeared to be a spring with a pool at the beginning, but it seems to be polluted with years of leaf debris.

Do you think the deer drink out of this as is? Should I try and clean it up? Would that just make it leak? Water is often hard to find this high up during dry spells. It seems like a potential gold mine.

Its not the leaves that are making that appear dirty... Its hard to see in your pic, but its most likely alge. I think the deer will still use it just fine.

Interesting you bring that up, I have found over the years deer do not like CLEAN water. They seem to prefer the scummy swampy looking stuff. If given the choice they will drink out of an isolated scummy water hole over a nice clean flowing stream only a few yards apart. No idea why.

Did you see any tracks around it? I have a few similar water holes around here and they are hitting them regularly.

Thanks for your input, I'll leave it alone and try as is.
