Buck Exit Routes

Unread postby csoult » Tue Mar 24, 2015 1:27 am

This may be obvious, but..... I have found plenty buck beds, but I am having a hard time figuring out which way they are leaving their beds. Any help with generalities would be appreciated. I know each one will be different. I am hunting hill country and trails along the ridge to the beds are evident. I see dropping in the area that I believe to be the staging area, and believe that is the way they are leaving but just cant be sure. The 50 meter ring is what I think is the staging area and the red line is what I think is the bed entrance.

I guess what I'm looking for is validation or advice on sets. Thanks.

Entrances to beds in hill country generally come from below and hook up to the bed. Exits can go in any direction, but generally there is good sign on the exit trails if its a well used bedding area. I have some bedding areas where they exit in multiple directions, and some they almost always exit the same...

As far as entrances go this is pretty much what we saw, although it wasn't very far below that he entered maybe 5-10 yards. We actually had the food fortune of bumping a buck out of one of these beds, and he left on the red line. We did not see him or hear him but there is snow on the ground and you could see fresh (running) tracks out of the bed. I am thinking that in a hurry this buck took that route because it had the most cover, but on a typical exit he may be foraging in the area and taking his time coming out, there is some sign of this.
