aerials or topos

I'm really starting to get into this map reading, I'm not real good a topos yet but going to try more. Just wondering which one everyone prefers for scouting an are aerial or topo

Aerial maps are usually more telling for swamp, marsh and farm country.

Topo maps are better for mountains, hill country, bluff country even rolling terrain with minor elevation changes.

But you will always want to check aerial maps of an area to find transitions.

The aerial and topo will go together and are both needed. My tip for aerial is find a winter or black and white of an area. You will see more detail than a summer photo. Google earth has a timeline that will offer lots of dates for a specific location. Other guys will share some thoughts too.

An aerial photo with topo lines laid onto it is extremely helpful for most places.

Interesting. I always do the opposite. Course nowadays the first thing I do is go to Google earth. You must be more old school and check topos first. AAhh the old days of black and white aerials at $10 a pop. It still might have been cheaper with what we spend on computers and phones. Oh yeah and apps.

It's funny how a part of a map means nothing, till suddenly it does!

If you have a smartphone get the gps trimble hunt free. You can toggle between all different maps you can imagine. I use it exclusively anymore to scout.

I use in combination google earth, caltopo, bingmaps, cyber scouting and gps trimble while afield a tip on bingmaps look at the birdseye view from south angle and north angle...the images are different and actually today led me to finding a possible hotspot when the floods come to a particular spot.


from the south angle this doesnt look like much but just swamp grounds and not much transition or going on....NOW FLIP IT AROUND



This image was taken while the water was up and shows something special here in the swamp grounds.....HIGH GROUND.....i circled it in blue and its highly visible from the north angle vs the south angle. Very excited to get in there to see what this little point holds.
