On flat land, mainly looking for secluded or overlooked areas that are tough for a human to get to without getting wet or bleeding or walking upwind of it. Often there is a barrier of muck, shallow water or thick vegetation around it. On the aerial maps, follow the distinct edges with your eyes until you see a spot that you just have a feeling something would be hanging out there. "Dead end" types of spots like points surrounded by a barrier of some sort. Look for the nastiest, wettest piece of ground on the property and then look at the nearest piece of dry ground to it, a buck has probably spent some time there.

I would recommend looking through the land management forum to see examples of maps people have marked up.
