Scouting Monstrous Marsh this Weekend

Unread postby bowhunter15 » Sun Feb 15, 2015 3:06 pm

Big, big marsh. As in I divided it into 3 sections, then divided one of those into 6 sub sections, then picked one which was 2000 acres to focus on. Almost 40 islands to check out. Estimated walking path = 19.8 miles according to Google Earth. I'll give an update after my legs fall off tomorrow, and I'll try to make a video on logistically dividing and conquering such a huge land mass in a short amount of time without missing anything important... well I guess you'd never know if you missed anything important.

Good luck! That's a massive tract of land but high potential for a big one to "get lost" from all the hunters!

Sounds like an epic walk. This is a great year to scout the marshes. Lots of cold, not a lot of snow. Good luck!

Leave your plans with someone hardcore... in case u don't make it out. 20 miles in marsh ground in a day is pushing it

7-10 and I'm wasted

Solid advice. Even 10 miles with 8 inches of snow on level terrain is a but kicker.

Yea I'm planning on two days. I figure I'll be averaging 1mph if I'm lucky considering I'm studying the land and taking video notes. So roughly 20 hours of walking.

Come on guys I'm an old fart and I can do it in marsh land. :P

Pretty sure a young guy like bowhunter15 won't have a problem! ;)

How many acres is the marsh you will be scouting?

I'll just be focusing on 2000 acres for this trip, but the entire thing is much, much larger. I'll have to take multiple trips.

Only did 8.5 miles today, around 500 acres. Got really worried about frostbite on the face so I called it quits early. I thought yesterday was supposed to be cold, not today. Oh well. Explored roughly 15 islands (some you could call either two or one) and wasn't super impressed. I jumped one doe, and counted 5 beds, none huge, and maybe 2 fresh rubs. Lots of trails. Almost every island had fresh tracks on it. Usually only one set, but the last snow wasn't too long ago. I also found one ladder stand, a cheap hang on with two sticks, two hanging scent wicks, and an old metal ladder leaning against a dead tree. I've got the coordinates, and am thinking I might turn the ones for the stands in, whether or not anything is done about it.

I was just surprised to see the lack of buck sign. A lot of the area I went through looked really good for bedding. Thick, red brush, oaks, cattails, etc. Tomorrow is another day. They've got to be somewhere.

Anyone know what these are? Obviously man made. The first one is really close to a road. The second picture has a canal in the upper right, but what is that straight line going vertical? I walked along it yesterday. Its' like a little strip of dry ground with tiny ditches on each side. I could hop over the ditches.

Heading back out today. I'm going to hit some islands that are close to the road, but well away from the closest parking lots in either direction. Hoping that they are overlooked.

We have similar square & canals around here, and they are from current or past drilling operations.

I've never seen anything like that before, does anyone know how deep that water is? Could be hit or miss for a big buck bed inside those cuts

Looks like a RIM WRP project. Are they active in your marsh?
