Help me with this public land.
I am taking Friday off to scout this piece of public land. Where do you think the beds might be? I have never been to this land before.

Re: Help me with this public land.
I would also check east of the 903 symbol in that hooked point on east ridge. Your black dot 60 the east side ridge.

The black dot was only to mark the lot. The lots are numbered. But I will check it out!

Re: Help me with this public land.
First of all, many here have more experience than me in bed based hunting. But I usually can find good bucks, killing them is another story.
Personally, this time of year I would locate the food sources and follow any big tracks or rublines I find. In addition I would walk the leeward side of any hill, knob or thicket looking for potential bedding. I map all large rubs, multiple rubbed areas, scrapes, doe beds and buck beds I find. Those areas that I determine to have a high probably of a good buck living there will be visited in the spring for further investigation to pinpoint the exact beds, entrance and exit routes and stand placements.
Take your time, try to think like a buck and have fun.

Re: Help me with this public land.
I would check out all the leeward sides based on your most common wind set up.
Assuming south is the bottom of your image, I would check out just east of the 903 mark, southeast of the 905 mark, the point just below the 953, the pinch point just southwest of the black dot marked 60.

Assuming south is the bottom of the image, wouldn't the lee-side (i.e. sheltered from the wind) be N of 903, NW of 905, N of 953, and the N side of the knob just below the black dot marked 60? That saddle (or what you referred to as a pinch point) is likely a good spot to scout for beds but could be very difficult to hunt in a S wind.

South/southeast will work as a leeward side on those ridges. The pinch point had a leeward side and is a good spot for rut cruising.

What I am referencing is if the wind I blowing in a south/south east direction. I wasn't clear in my explanation.

Not sure how the hunting pressure is there, but I would expect other hunters to flock towards the big hill... I would look along the transitions along the river bottom and look for isolated areas where others have to cross water to get too.

No, no. It's my mistake. I'm new to reading topos so I'm still trying to learn all the terminology. Here in SW Ontario topos are almost useless as the land is flat as f*ck. Also, the convention here in Canada when someone says
is that they mean a wind that is coming out of the South or out of the South-East, blowing in a N/NW direction.JeremyD wrote:South or SE wind.
