Something that I thought about on the drive back regarding wind...

So if a buck is bedded on a ridge with wind to his back and eyes to the front what should be your goal in terms of wind? approach from the side? Which direction will he move once he gets up? The direction he was facing?

If you approach from the front he has thermals and if you approach from behind the wind is blowing towards him.

Thinking about that point facing the marsh, he had his eyes to the woods not to the marsh so how do you know he is going to come into the woods and not towards the marsh? Prior observation?

the main reason why they come up on the main land there in that spot is because of the oaks ...there's no oaks and acorns in the cattails .....not saying they wouldn't go into the cattails but acorns is what's drawing them op onto the main land in early sep/early

you get in on an "OFF WIND" just off to the side with a slight cross wind so its not blowing in there but still the right wind for the buck to be bedded there. a lot of guys think its got to be blowing perfectly right over the ridge , it dose not . it can be off to the side one way or another as long as its still with in the bucks comfort zone and that wind is over his back

the buck will most likely walk with the wind to his back smelling what's behind him and looking ahead but there's no grantees he will go what direction he wants I've seen both seniors!

Your goal should be to understand the wind, and to hunt as close as possible without wind getting to buck... As far as to what direction the buck is traveling, he is going towards food, water, or does, depending on the day / time of year bedded there. His leaving the bed has little to do with wind direction in most cases, in my opinion.
Think about the buck beds on the ridge we looked at. He was bedding the 1/3 down, wind over the top watching the food plot and had thermals coming up from the plot. My stand was just barley out of sight, and just barely out of smell...

Thinking about that point facing the marsh, he had his eyes to the woods not to the marsh so how do you know he is going to come into the woods and not towards the marsh? Prior observation?
Educated guess based on observations and experience. As Bighunt indicated, not much food in a sea of cattails, I would expect him to head towards food or does, which would both be found further up the point not out in the cattails. He would have water all around him, so I would not expect him to head into the marsh. Thats not top say it never happens, but rather that we set up on percentages.

It was a great day, learned alot, makes everything easier to understand seeing it in person. I'm pretty sure I learned more in 8 hours saturday than I would have in 8 more seasons doing the same crap that doesn't work. Money well spent.

It's Tuesday and I'm out scouting for the third day in a row. Workshop was 4 days ago. I have found two setups on one property, another one on another, and struggling at the property I'm on today. I wouldn't have any of these if it weren't for the workshop. Today's property might be over pressured because I can't figure out why there is such little deer sign on what appears to be prime habitat.
