Good stuff Dewey!

Sometimes guys training gun dogs/pups will carry a starter pistol and fire it while the dog is working to get the dog accustomed to load noises.....only thing I can think of.

Looking good Dewey!! So far this winter has been great for scouting. Most of the wet parts of the marsh are froze and there's no snow so all of the sign from this fall is still very visible. Trying to do as much scouting as possible right now.

Been scouting hard since Dec 18th and only missed 4 of the last 18 days. Didn't take pics every day but tried to document interesting stuff I found along the way. I feel I have a great head start for next season and the lack of December snow really helped me read current fresh sign.

I kept track of distance covered on my Fitbit during the last 2 1/2 weeks and had over 150,000 steps and walked just over 70 miles! :o No wonder my knees are hurting me the last few days.

My scouting time be be limited from now till spring so I can rest easy knowing that I put in some good effort already. I'm sure when I look back starting next season I will be glad I put in this time.

Back to work and reality again tomorrow!

Funny story about the starter gun I found earlier in this thread.

I cleaned it up and stuck it in my gun cabinet figuring someday someone may have a use for it. Forgot about it and was talking to a guy at work about scouting one day and mentioned that I found it. He right away perked up and said he lost his and proceeded to tell me where which shockingly was the location where I found it! :o

I asked him to describe the gun and he was right on so I showed him the pics. He couldn't believe that I found it in the middle of Kettle Moraine State Forest considering it was a pretty remote spot. What are the odds that it would belong to a guy I work with considering how many people use the forest? Crazy how that worked out!

Oh yeah the mystery is solved. He used the starter gun to train his bird dog. ;)

Dewey wrote:One of the main things I keyed in on yesterday was rut cruising areas. These are trails downwind of doe bedding areas that for the most part don't even show up till Halloween. You can always tell when the searching for a hot doe starts because these trails appear overnight it seems. In the soft marsh peat these trails are very easy to identify and this years sign is still extremely fresh. I like to have a large number of these to chose from each year for the rut.

[glow=red]The spot I killed my buck this year and saw 15 total bucks on Nov 5th was exactly the type of spots I was looking for yesterday.[/glow]That spot was narrowed down over the years and I knew it would produce good bucks if I hit the right day. My final adjustment was decided a week before when I took a day off hunting to scout. A little luck and a hot doe was all that was needed.

I remember this day perfectly because I was in Ohio and the action was slow. You made a post about how slow it was and then BAM, your thread blew up with rut activity. I tried your posting tactic but it didn't work out as well for me.
