Do bucks cruise the leeward side of the ridges during the rut?
With the thermals rising, Im thinking they can run either side and catch scent of bedding does?

Re: Hill country rut cruising question?
I find good cruise trails on leeward sides often. I think scent checking thermals does have something to do with it.

Yes... They cruise most often at the thermal tunnel where the wind and thermal collide.

How do you find the thermal tunnel again? Are there any key characteristic to tip a guy off that he is in the mixing zone?
Im assuming, if you cant find the thermal tunnel, as long as you are in the top third of the hill and above the elevation line where the beds are, you should be close to the thermal tunnel right?
Be in the woods as often as you can....and as long as you can!

When there is a steady wind, walk downhill with the wind at your back. When you stop feeling the wind you are at the top of the tunnel.
The steeper the hill the higher in elevation the tunnel will be.

X2 yes thanks!
When that big buck walks towards you this fall, concentrate on your breathing and get your eyes off his antlers.

How much of a drop does a hill need to create an upward thermal?
