Help me find That buck.

Unread postby TN Whitetail Freak » Sat Oct 04, 2014 3:45 am

I have a new spot that ive only went into once....i sat 9 hrs in the stand on October 1st with no deer sightings. The stand indicates where i was located at. opinions on my first stand try is welcomed though it was a disappointing sit. I did however see a good 2 year old earlier that morning when traveling back to the spot from where my truck is parked I headed SE toward the south boundary and then headed due east and then to the point. I did watch a bean field until 7 am that is south of the pond. That is where I seen that buck. the orange outlines a serious thicket i have the cuts to prove it. I checked the pond out and it is being used but didnt see any large tracks around it. from there i dove down NE into the cut and peeled around the point where I arrived at my stand location. Opinions on where I need to try next? this is the first time hunting it and every hunt is a blind hunt and I wont be able to hunt this land come next year.

I would be somewhere where that saddle dumps into the next cut to the north of where you sat. Looks like 3 funnels there, the cut, the saddle and the thin strip of thicket. Also it is closer to the likely bedding points to the north.

Pretty sure he's looking at this saddle. The x is right at the head of the drain just NE of the saddle.

My opinion on your 1st stand is if it is where it is actually marked on the map, its below the bedding points. and a buck bedded above you would of smelled you based on thermals. Also, early October generally does not get much day light activity. 9 hours on the stand seems a little extreme.

I marked red dots in the spots I would think about hunting.

cbigbear got it. That is the area I would be around the rut. Dan's setups are closer to the bedding and should get you better daylight movement any time of year.

What I was trying to stress in Hill country was that you need to hunt above them... Thermals will get you busted below unless you get far enough back or move in after thermal switch.
