How do you find accurate property lines??

Unread postby ohmyrod » Sat Aug 30, 2014 6:22 am

Hey guys just wondering how one would go about finding the correct property lines when scouting next to private land. I use the wisconsin DNR public lands map but its only an estimate. How does one find a more accurate map or gps of the land as to avoid trespassing. Thanks!

County plat book. Can help sometimes.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

If i'm in a spot where I am walking very close to the line I will mark the property corner points on my gps ahead of time before i scout or hunt. Usually, not always, there is a line fence in place and I stay on the public side. When there is not a line fence, I do the best I can with my gps. I know they do sell the gps cards with property lines displayed but they are $100.

Heres the $100 version. I have almost pulled the trigger on buying this but I can get by without it.

Most states also have a website the the following ones that will give you an online plat book for the whole state:

Wisconsin:

Iowa:

Go to google, then type your county, state them type GIS map. Lots of counties have these free online plat books with Ariel's with accurate property lines

Some of these website state that the map cannot be used for legal purposes and other can, so make sure you not trespassing but in my experience they are very accurate.

This is what I do too. The property lines and land owners names are available. First i check the DNR website map so I know where the public areas are. Then I use the county GIS websites for accurate property lines.

I use a Garmin Oregon GPS and make Custom aerials of my hunting areas. I draw the property lines on the Custom Map aerials I make so they show on the GPS. Works great. It does require a bit of work to make the maps though. It would be easier just to buy the pre made property maps like Dewey was suggesting.

You could open caltopo or google earth in another screen and adjust the scale and position so it closely overlays with your county GIS aerials. You will need to click back and forth between the two screens and then drop in waypoints on caltopo/google earth. You can then send them direct to your gps.

Or, manually type in the coordinates from caltopo/google earth for each property corner...but that would be labor intensive if you have alot of boundries to mark.
