Third Time's a Charm

Unread postby psubowhunter54 » Thu Jun 19, 2014 4:30 am

I've been hunting my cousin's camp for the last two years, and learn more and more every time I head out there. Unfortunately I haven't been able to connect with a big buck, but I feel the area has great potential. I head up there the week before Thanksgiving while I'm off of school, so for an 8 hour drive I'd like to finally close the deal. My cousin owns the house and a "U" around the property of about 5 acres. Behind the 5 acres is all state land and I feel like that swamp is going to be the ticket. The week I go up is the second week of the gun season so I feel like these deer see a decent amount of pressure. I'd love to get some opinions on this piece. Thanks in advance everyone!

The red dot and U is the house and private property, the blue is a rough boundary of the state land.

If for some reason the images are blocked the photobucket code is: mapmap

Like you said the 2nd weekend of gun season will have the deer hiding. I would find the thickest nastiest area in the swamp or an area you think everyone else is overlooking.

I will pretty much echo what wisco said, after all that pressure hunt where no one else has or where no one else is willing to go. Hit the wet stuff and the nasty/thick stuff and you will find the deer.

Thanks guys. I was feeling the same thing, but I guess my question would then be should I hang a set and wait it out, or do small 2-3 man drives with one guy posted on the opposite side of the bedding area and one trailing on the downwind side?

The large swamp to the NW(otto drain) is not public?

I like that area too...

Can you zoom in much closer and give me some big clear images of the swampy areas?

Dan, I highlighted the game land road in red, the red arrow points North towards the house and the yellow arrow points towards the parking area and public access point. I've come across some monster rubs and have had trail cam pics of some decent bucks. It's just part of the puzzle of coming from out of state and relying on info from a previous year or family member who hunts it more regularly. Thanks again for all your help guys.

I'll also call my cousin and see what the deal is with the otto drain. We've seen posted signs in the area but not consistently. I'm not sure if it's parceled and the private land owners have theirs marked. I'll get back to you on that.

Here is a close up of the otto drain. The red outline is a rough marker of what is public.

Here is the state game lands of the area, our private plot is the black blob west of S Perrin Rd: Image
