Nice Peninsula Bed - Encounter

Unread postby Trailcamaddict » Wed Jun 04, 2014 5:54 am

This last weekend while fishing for panfish my wife and I saw a very large very grey deer slither out of a bed on a peninsula. As soon as we saw it we knew it was a good deer. She knew I would spend the next day thinking about that area. I haven't actually walked on ground in the area yet but have a good idea of what's going on just based on our quick encounter.

There is a large blow down (blue line) that extends out into the water. This deer was bedded (red oval) with it's back to the blow down and looking out over the water on the right side of the picture. The wind is coming from over the deer's back from the main body of water.

This area gets zero hunter pressure!

To me this looks like classic bedding just as described in Dan's videos.

This weekend I plan to go there and walk a bit to see if the bed is being used often and see what other info I can gather.

I would not have suspected a buck would bed here. He has limited escape routes and the wind seems wrong. What threat would approach him from the south?

Am I missing something?

Interested to see what you find out.

That sounds like the best scouting there is. Fishing and finding deer.

Might be able to verify he's actually in the bed with binocs while u act like ur fishing from farther away. Maybe that won't bump him. Then slip in and set up.

Yes!

Is the water between the penisula and the mainland shallow enough for him to escape through the water? That would make an awesome 2 man push during gun season with only 2 escape routes on the peninsula. 1. running straight back down the peninsula or 2. haulling but across the water to the mainland.

He probably has good visual to the North. He almost definitely swims to escape when approached.

Also I bet he has beds on the other side of the blowdown for Northerly winds.

Any deer using this area can easily swim across the narrow portion of water. It is very shallow so they may not even have to swim much.

I did end up going back to this place once over the summer. I didn't see a deer the second time. But there are 2 or beds. One on each side of the dead fall. They are being used. Big droppings old and new in the area.

It's on the radar! :L:

Sweet, you have a plan of attack? Can you slip in close with a kayak on S winds or something? Seems very huntable with a gun… seems like a tough spot with bow.
