Scouting window is closing fast here in SE WI

Unread postby Dewey » Wed Apr 23, 2014 7:14 am

Green up is really accelerating here and to be honest it really bums me out. No matter how much scouting I do it never feels like enough and I guess you could say it's a minor addiction to me!

Problem is that I have been working like crazy and only had two days off since the beginning of April. Been very stir crazy knowing I am missing prime scouting time. Hope to get out this weekend if work cooperates. Once the snow is gone up north it opens up more options since green up is a long ways away up there.

How are scouting conditions in your area?

Just lost the snow up north, nothing close to green up here yet. Going to be working the woods hard after work tomorrow and this weekend. Like you haven't been out as much as I would like to and another late spring will cost me extra time in the woods. Just have to squeeze in as much as you can.

I know we all talk about scouting before green up as being the most effective, but from what I see I think it could be pretty good for a couple weeks yet. Most of the marshes near me are at least a foot under water right now so scouting is not even possible without hip boots at the least. I think when the water levels go down and there is greenery growing, you may not get to see bedding that is all matted down from lots of use in the fall, but we should still be able to tell if a buck has used a bed in the last few days via matted down green grass and tracks. This might be even more useful at times, since the bed is fresh for a shorter period of time (grass growing etc.) we should be able to pin down what wind the bed was used on more easily. I think the biggest problem or deterrent for me will be biting bugs.

In my area, Southern Indiana, trees budding out, but woods still fairly think....the only bad thing right now are the ticks. We have had a lack of rain in the last week so tracks are getting harder to delineate. Am seeing a lot of deer though....was never able to find any sheds yet although did find a basket 8 skull, almost looks as if he died in his bed or something.

Greening up here, time to turkey hunt.

Dew, we are looking are close to each other. I was out today. Some green stuff coming through, but it is still really brown out there. I would guess we have a solid week left. The rain we have/will have this week will green things up in a hurry.

I'm faced with the same issues of greenup. However, no worries because I have successfully scouted well into the "jungle" timeframe and been successful. It helped to have a GPS and be scouting contour lines though... ;)

With that being said...no turkey hunting this weekend just scouting! Need to get as much done as possible.
